How to plant lavender seeds?

Lavender is often sold in pots at garden centers, but there's nothing stopping you from growing your own lavender plants from carefully chosen seeds. Whether you're an occasional or seasoned gardener, here are our tips for properly planting your lavender seeds. The secret? A lot of patience and observation.

1. In a small pot (the size of a yogurt pot) with drainage holes at the bottom, place a layer of 1 to 2 cm of gravel, then fill with a half-and-half mixture of garden soil and sand to create a well-draining mix. Lightly tamp down.

2. Place the lavender seeds on the soil and gently "sweep" the surface with your fingers to settle them in superficially.

3. Use a water sprayer to moisten everything.

4. Cover with a piece of plastic wrap and make a few holes in it.

5. Place the pot in the bottom of the refrigerator at 4°C, ensuring the soil remains moist for 6 weeks.

6. Remove the pot, take off the plastic, and allow the seeds to germinate while keeping the soil moist.

7. Be patient; the seeds will start to germinate at least 2 months later.

8. Have one or more lavender seedlings developed? Success! You can plant your new lavenders in the ground. They will continue to grow, and you can enjoy their lovely color or make beautiful scented sachets for your wardrobe.

If you prefer to plant lavandin, the method is very different because this plant is a hybrid, it is sterile and has no seeds!
